Ever had one of those days?

There are times as a coach you think  “should I give up?”.

I went along to watch one of our under 12 teams last week. I saw how well they warmed up, how eager they were for the match to begin.

Running, passing, stretching, joking with their teammates. I was impressed. They lined up and straight from kick off they let a goal in. I don’t think any of them actually moved.

They were all looking around at each other shrugging their shoulders. “What’s going on!” “We weren’t ready!” The coach was struck dumb. It’s hard when you’ve done all the mechanical work but when the whistle blows the car doesn’t start.

They never recovered and lost the game. I spoke to the coach afterwards. He had prepared the team well, worked hard at training on a cold, rainy evening and felt very flat over what had happened on the pitch.

But the next week the team won. They didn’t let a goal in for the whole of the first half. And the difference a week made was huge in the smiles and cheers.

So even if you have had one of those days things can change… quickly.

MY TEAM STRUGGLES FROM THE START ON MOST EARLY MORNING KICK-OFFS
WE HAD ARRANGED A FRIENDLY MATCH AGAINST A LOCAL TEAM WHICH WE THOUGHT TO BE OF SIMILAR STANDARD THE WEEKEND BEFORE THE LEAGUE RESTARTED AFTER THE XMAS BREAK
THE BOYS LINED UP AS USUAL AND WE HAVE A ON A VERY COLD SUNDAY MORNING AND GOT READY TO KICK-OFF
(WE HAVE A BIT OF A ROUTINE THAT WORKS VERY WELL FOR US FROM THIS POSITION) BUT AS THE REF BLEW THE WHISTLE…..
THE OTHER TEAM JUST FLOODED THE CENTRE CIRCLE STOLE THE BALL AND AS A MASS OF 8/9 YEAR OLDS CHARGED OUR GOAL – MY SON (WHO IS THE KEEPER) WAS STILL HALF WAY THROUGH A YAWN WHEN THE BALL WENT PAST HIM!
THEY WERE DEVASTATED NEVER CONCEDED A GOAL SO QUICK
SO MUCH SO THAT THE SAME THING HAPPENED AGAIN
STRAIGHT AWAY 2-0 DOWN WITHIN 5 MINS
HEADS DROPPED AND ANOTHER 3 WENT IN BEFORE HALF TIME
NOT EVEN THE PARENTS COULD BELEIVE IT BUT THEIR COMMENTS WERE “IT’S TOO COLD TO PLAY TODAY”
TO WHICH MY SNAPPY RESPONSE WAS “IT’S JUST AS COLD FOR THEM IN THE OTHER TEAM!!”
SOME PRIDE RESTORED IN THE SECOND HALF WHEN WE MANAGED TO GET 3 GOALS BACK WHEN WE DECIDED TO ACTUALLY WAKE UP FOR THE GAME AND MANAGED TO STRING A FEW PASSES TOGETHER
